Dante’s journey begins with the loss of direction, before the descent into Hell. In The Eternal Road, every terzina of Canto I is paired with an original illustration by KARMEN-ITA, allowing the reader to follow the poem through words and images, one encounter at a time.

The forest closes around the traveller. The distant light promises escape, but the leopard, the lion, and the she-wolf stand between him and the hillside. Then Virgil appears: a voice from the ancient world, offering guidance through a journey Dante cannot undertake alone.

Rendered in a contemporary gothic style, the illustrations draw the reader into the tension of each scene. Deep shadows, constructed light, and carefully composed settings give visual form to the fear, hesitation, and fragile hope of the opening canto.

Dante’s verses in Italian are accompanied by an English translation and commentary. KARMEN-ITA’s original illustrations accompany every terzina, creating space to pause over the poetry and experience its place in the unfolding story.

Volume I is devoted to Canto I, the first encounter between Dante and his guide.
